Sno Park

We headed out to a snow sledding area on Mt.Hood today with the O’Hallorans. This was a free area where you bring your own sled. The snow was getting pretty mushy but the warm air temperatures were great. Vada seemed to have fun sledding with each of us and on her own. She even requested that we hit more bumps!

Easter in Denver

Vada and I flew to Denver to meet up with family for Easter weekend. Vada immediately fell in love with Zoey and wanted to be with her everywhere. We were in separate vehicles traveling places due to the car seat arrangement and Vada would ask for Zoey about every minute in a sad sweet (OK at times maybe whiney) voice.

Vada only wanted Grandma to hold her…

… Until she learned that Emily and Kelly could toss her much higher in the air.

It was sunny and clear for the Easter egg hunt but the wind was incredibly cold. Vada had said she thought she could five eggs and she easily got that with the help of Grandpa’s downfield blocking.

And just like that Vada announced she was done and cold.

Zoey was cold and wanted to be in the blanket but seemed totally grossed out by Vada’s bloody runny nose.

Vada was sweet on the flight home. She kept saying she wanted to share her eggs with Dada. But she kept wanting to eat the chocolate eggs too. Each time she would ask for an egg we would have to do a count and make sure there were some left for Dada. We made it home with three.

Vada took more than her fair share of turns on Zoey’s microphone.

We scheduled a photo shoot for the three cousins. Zoey can turn on her smile like a pageant beauty. Cooper is cooperative but would probably rather be doing something else. Vada didn’t want to smile and then wouldn’t even sit up on the photo platform and instead rolled around the floor.

Then she figured out she could really control the situation by turning around backwards every time we said smile.

Here is what Vada and Zoey wanted to do as soon as we freed them from the picture studio. Grandpa gave them each two quarters. Zoey put her’s in right away and Tigger bounced and sang. Then I told Vada it was her turn to put her quarters in.

But no, Vada was not going to put her quarters in so Zoey had to pretend to make Tigger drive while Vada held tightly to her quarters.

Here is a closer look at the colored bubbles. Kind of slimy stuff. Definitely makes it clear what kid doesn’t have the hang of keeping their mouth of the bubble stick because Vada had pink and purple all around her lips.

Attempting a quick photo of the grandparents and grandkids. I have no clue why Zoey is holding up a rock but believe me this is the best shot out of ten that I took.

Zoey and Vada baking cookies. Zoey decided they needed a snack while they were baking even though the only “baking” involved here was taking the dough out of the package and putting it on the cookie sheet.

Bad quality picture but cute high five after they finished with the cookies.

Playing on Zoey’s balance beam. Man that girl is photogenic.

Vada traded Zoey a Dora doll for a KU Jayhawk to cuddle with on the way to the airport.

Capturing more tiny moments

One of Vada’s teachers at the daycare was talking to Vada about how she was going to grow big and tall. Vada told her she wanted to stay tiny.

Sunday comics

Today before nap time Vada tried to go potty and nothing came out. She said her tummy was empty and that she went potty too many times at daycare last week. I asked where her lemonade she drank at lunch went and she said it was in her toes.

Drying off

Vada got out of the bath last night and noticed the heat was coming out of the floor vent. She wanted to use it to dry off so she dropped her towel. She spent several minutes drying off her feet, knees, back, and tummy. Flipping from front to back and scooting all around she narrated all her actions. (This kid would have loved the furnace at 409!)

Torre del Paine

We are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary later this spring so we planned a trip to Patagonia to commemorate. The weather window in Patagonia required that we go earlier than our May 25th wedding anniversary date though. March is the end of summer in Patagonia and spring break in the States allowed for more helpers for Vada so we made a go for it.

We planned a 8-9 day circuit trek around Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chilean Patagonia which encompasses mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers.

A couple weeks ago after getting Twila, Karma, and Wes settled here in Portland with Vada (Joan, Emily and Cooper came up the second week) we headed south via Houston and Buenos Aires and El Calafate, Argentina. And then after a six hour bumpy bus ride (with too many touristy stops for Toban’s taste) we arrived at the Torres del Paine National Park entrance.

We then proceeded to trek, around 10 – 25 kilometers a day, for 6 days (we went a bit faster than we planned). The terrain ranged from horse pastures, to high desert, to forests, to mountain glacier passes, to rocky river scrambles. Every day was different. Most nights we pitched a tent at one of the many campsites spread out around the park. The campsites varied in quality and resources, but most had toilets of some sort, sinks and/or showers, and sometimes a small hut with some food supplies. The nicest campsites had refugios where you could pay to stay inside in bunk beds, warm up by a fireplace and have a hot dinner and breakfast. After hiking all day in the rain and wind on our toughest, longest day we opted to stay in Refugio Grey and it was well worth it. Our final night in the park we also splurged by staying at Hosteria Los Torres.

We had a great trip, but it felt pretty good to get home to Vada. She had an excellent time with her Grandmas, Aunts and Cousins. It was great to see her get to connect with relatives that she only gets to see a couple of times a year.

We’ve posted a bunch of photos from the trip here
